Masks

This series of masks have been carved in Nsibidi, an ancient system of symbols and proto-writing indigenous to southeastern Nigeria and southwestern Cameroon. Consisting of over 1,000 abstract and pictorial signs. the system communicates ideas, actions, and logic rather than spoken words or phonetic alphabets. It is a fluid system, so characters can be read from any direction with a single symbol or set of symbols representing abstract concepts, messages, proverbs, ritual practices, etc.
